EASY Matcha Latte Recipe - Ashley Avenue (2024)

If you need an easy, no-fuss, matcha latte recipe, look no further. This recipe is super low-maintenance and only takes 5 minutes!

My days of paying $6 for an iced matcha latte at Starbucks are over! Learning how to make my own lattes at home changed the game for me. Getting my non-coffee caffeine fix is part of my daily morning routine now. The matcha latte recipe is below but keep reading to see my recommendations for matcha powder and a matcha whisk.

For those who want the recipe now…

After experimenting with different recipes and tools, I’ve found that this method below works the best for me. It does not involve making a sugar syrup or dirtying multiple cups and bowls to whisk your matcha. I can make a latte in 5 minutes and only have to clean my drinking glass when I’m done!

Ingredients / Tools

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder (keep scrolling for my matcha powder recommendations)
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of hot water
  • 1/2 cup ice (or 5-6 cubes)
  • 1 cup milk of your choice
  • Matcha whisk (keep scrolling for my whisk recommendations)

Instructions

  1. Measure 1 teaspoon of matcha powder and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and put both into your drinking glass.
  2. Pour 2 tablespoons of hot water over the matcha powder and brown sugar to dissolve (It’s not vital to measure this if you don’t want to. I just eyeball the amount of water needed to dissolve both).
  3. Whisk the hot water, matcha, and sugar until no lumps appear. Whisking as soon as the water goes in is helpful to minimize matcha clumps.
  4. Add the desired amount of ice to the glass.
  5. Pour in 1 cup of milk. Any kind of milk goes! My go-to is 2% regular milk.
  6. Stir and enjoy! My preferred stirring tool is a chopstick.

Matcha Powders

I’ve tested a few matcha powders at this point and these are the ones I recommend (not sponsored).

Tenzo Organic Matcha

Tenzo matcha was the first one I purchased when I started making my own lattes. I purchased this starter kit which has everything you need: 60 g of matcha (=60 servings), a scooper, and electric mixer for $55. I know that $55 is not cheap but remember that each serving is less than $1! Tenzo also has a subscription/refill service so it can be even less than $55 if you choose to subscribe.

I love the vibrant green color of this powder and the non-bitter, smooth taste. It is also potent and requires less powder per serving than other matchas I’ve tried! My recipe above calls for 1 teaspoon for a brand of matcha powder I will be discussing next, while you only need 1/2 teaspoon of Tenzo matcha for one serving.

Naoki Fine Japanese Matcha

I’ve been purchasing this matcha more lately because I love the convenience and the price. It’s sold on Amazon (click here) and is less than $30. One container lasts me about a month so it is also less than $1 per serving.

This Naoki matcha also has a beautiful vibrant green color and smooth taste. Amazon carries other matcha powders in the Naoki line. The one I buy is Fragrant Yame Blend: Ceremonial Grade Matcha ($25.99). Others in the line include:

The only other matcha I’ve tried from Naoki is the Superior Blend: Ceremonial Grade. I wanted to see if I could get away with saving a few dollars if the quality was comparable. I did a side-by-side taste test with my trusty Fragrant Yame Blend: Ceremonial Grade and it just wasn’t as good. It tasted a tad more bitter and despite my best whisking efforts, was still grainy when I drank it. Spending the extra $3 is worth it to me!

Matcha Whisks

When I first started making matcha lattes, I used a bamboo matcha whisk like the one pictured on the left. It definitely got the job done–I just did not enjoy having to whisk my matcha in a separate bowl then transfer it to a drinking glass. The matcha whisk was not fun to wash either.

For the sake of speed, efficiency, and less dishes to wash, I switched to an electric whisk/frother. Even though I haven’t purchased Tenzo matcha in awhile, I am still loyal to the mixer I received in the original Trial Kit! The whisk gets all of the lumps out and does it quickly. It’s also super easy to wash – I just rinse it with water immediately after I’m done using it. It’s so much easier to dry and clean than the bamboo matcha whisk.

As for what to purchase, you can easily find either of these on Amazon by searching “matcha whisk” or “milk frother.” I am not loyal to any particular brand, so choose one within your budget!

Now you know my fast and easy matcha latte recipe! I hope it inspires you to make your own!
